Privacy Policy

How Neary collects, uses, and protects your information — including your location, which we treat with particular care.

Last updated: August 27, 2026

1. Introduction

[Company Legal Name] (“Neary”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the Neary mobile application and website (together, the “Service”). Neary helps people discover and connect with others nearby for friendship, conversation, and spontaneous social activities — it is not a dating service.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you have regarding it. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. Who This Policy Applies To

This Policy applies to everyone who uses the Service, including visitors to our website and registered users of the app. Neary is intended solely for individuals aged 18 and older; see “Children’s Privacy” below.

3. Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly, information generated by your use of the Service, and information from other users when it relates to you (for example, a report or a block).

a. Information you provide

  • Account information — name, email address or phone number, password (stored in hashed form), and date of birth (used to confirm you meet our minimum age requirement).
  • Profile information — profile photo(s), bio, interests, and any other details you choose to add to your profile.
  • Communications — messages you send through the Service, and correspondence when you contact our support team.
  • Safety reports — information you submit when you report or block another user.

b. Location information

Nearby discovery is core to how Neary works, so location information is central to this Policy — see “Location Information” below for how it’s specifically handled.

c. Information collected automatically

  • Device information — device model, operating system and version, unique device identifiers, mobile network information, and app version.
  • Usage information — features you use, actions you take (e.g., going online/offline, pings sent), session length, and crash and performance diagnostics.
  • Log and network information — IP address, browser type, referring/exit pages, and timestamps.

d. Information from third parties

If you choose to sign up or log in using a third-party account (for example, Sign in with Apple or Google), that provider shares basic profile information with us — such as your name and email address — in accordance with your settings on that platform.

4. Location Information

Because Neary is built around meeting people who are physically nearby, location is treated with particular care:

  • We collect precise (GPS-based) location only while you are “online” in the app and have granted location permission on your device. Turning yourself offline or revoking location permission stops new location collection.
  • Other users never see your exact coordinates. We calculate and display only an approximate, rounded distance (e.g., “0.3 mi away”) or a general area.
  • You control your visibility radius and can go offline at any time from within the app, which immediately stops you from appearing to others.
  • We do not sell precise location data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
  • [Describe here whether background location is ever collected when the app is closed/minimized, and, if so, under what circumstances and permission prompts.]

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Operate core features — nearby discovery, pings, and messaging between users.
  • Create and maintain your account and authenticate you.
  • Personalize your experience, such as default search radius or interests shown.
  • Maintain the safety and integrity of the Service — investigating reports, preventing fraud and abuse, and enforcing our Terms and Community Guidelines.
  • Provide customer support and respond to your requests.
  • Send service-related communications (e.g., account, security, and safety notices) and, where you’ve opted in, product updates and marketing.
  • Analyze and improve the Service, including through aggregated and de-identified analytics.
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our agreements.

We do not use the content of your private messages to build advertising profiles. We may access message content where necessary to investigate a safety report, enforce our Terms, or comply with a legal obligation.

6. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • With other users — the profile information you choose to show, and your approximate distance from them, as described above.
  • Service providers — vendors who host our infrastructure, send push notifications, provide customer support tooling, or perform analytics on our behalf, bound by contractual confidentiality and data protection obligations. [List key categories/vendors, e.g. cloud hosting, push notification provider, analytics provider, customer support platform.]
  • Safety and legal reasons — when we believe in good faith it’s necessary to comply with applicable law, respond to a valid legal process, or protect the rights, property, or safety of Neary, our users, or the public.
  • Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, subject to standard confidentiality arrangements.
  • With your consent — in any other case where you direct us to share your information.
  • Aggregated or de-identified data — we may share information that has been aggregated or stripped of identifying details and cannot reasonably be used to identify you.

7. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, and understand how the site is used. The app uses comparable technologies, such as SDKs, for analytics and crash reporting. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling them may affect some site functionality. [Add a cookie table or link to a separate Cookie Policy if one is maintained.]

8. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within [insert period, e.g. 30 days], except where we are required or permitted to retain it longer — for example, to investigate an open safety report, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, or comply with legal, tax, or accounting obligations.

9. Your Rights and Choices

a. In-app controls

  • Access and update your profile information at any time.
  • Go offline or adjust your visibility radius.
  • Block or report another user.
  • Manage notification and marketing preferences.
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data from within the app or by contacting us.

b. Additional rights depending on your location

If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK, or another jurisdiction with similar protections, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, restrict or object to certain processing, and withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. If you are a California resident, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion, and opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information (we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising). To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in “Contact Us” below. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

10. Children's Privacy

Neary is not directed to, and is not intended for use by, anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a person under 18, we will delete that information and terminate the associated account promptly. If you believe a minor is using Neary, please contact us using the details below.

11. Data Security

We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information, including encryption of data in transit and access controls limiting who within our organization can access personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. International Data Transfers

We are based in [insert country] and may process and store information in countries other than your own. Where we transfer personal information internationally, we use appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, as required by applicable law.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app, by email, or by posting a notice on our website before the changes take effect. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
